Rainwater tank

Rainwater tank: worked out with your village's rain

Choose your village, then enter the roof area and your daily water need. The calculation follows the water entering and leaving the tank month by month with your village's monthly rain normal (CHIRPS v3.0, 1991–2020) and finds the tank size that lasts through the dry months.

Formula: water collected in a month (litres) = roof area (m²) × that month's rain (mm) × 0.8 × 0.9. 0.8 is the runoff share of a sloped, rough roof and 0.9 the filter efficiency; both are the values in the example of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change guide “Yerinde İçilemez Su Sistemleri Kılavuzu – Gri Su ve Yağmur Suyu Kullanımına Yönelik Sistemler” (guide to on-site non-potable water systems, March 2025). Each month the water entering the tank is added and the water used is taken out; the tank is big enough to cover the largest shortfall that builds up during the year. If the water collected in a year is less than the need, the tank can only store the surplus of the rainy months.

This is a rough monthly water balance; for a building project the method the regulation asks for (TS EN 16941-1, Annex A) applies. Your roof type changes the runoff share. “Driest year” is the year in which your village's cell got the least rain in 1996–2025 (measured).

Summary

Choose your village, then enter your roof area and daily water need: the tank size that lasts through the dry months is worked out from your village's monthly rain. By province: how many m³ of rain fall on a roof each year. The regulation is quoted in Turkish.

Choose your province

Each province page (in Turkish) gives the yearly rain normal (mm), how many m³ fall each year on a 100 m² / 200 m² / 500 m² roof, and a calculation with your own roof area. 81 provinces have a rain normal.

Article 57/A, paragraph (5): Binalarda tasarruf tedbirleri ve iklim değişikliğine dair ilkeler

What it is about: buildings where a rainwater collection system is required.

(5) (Ek:RG-11/3/2025-32838) Binalarda su verimliliğinin artırılması amacıyla 57 nci maddenin yedinci fıkrasının (a) bendindeki esaslara uyulmak suretiyle;

a) Yağmur suyu toplama sistemlerinin;

1) Depo hacmi ihtiyacı 7 m3’ün üzerinde olması kaydıyla; parsel alanı 2.000 m²’den büyük alanlardaki yapılarda veya parseldeki toplam çatı izdüşüm alanı 1000 m²’den büyük yapılarda,

2) Depo hacmi ihtiyacı 7 m3’ü geçen kamu yapılarında,

tesis edilmesi zorunludur.

b) Gri su toplama sistemlerinin;

1) Yatak sayısı 200’den fazla olan konaklama amaçlı binalarda,

2) Yapı inşaat alanı 10.000 m²’den büyük alışveriş merkezlerinde,

3) Yapı inşaat alanı 30.000 m²’den büyük kamu binalarında,

tesis edilmesi zorunludur. Sağlık ve eğitim yapılarında gri su sistemlerinin tesis edilmesi zorunlu değildir.

Article 57, paragraph (7), item (a) and sub-item (1)

What it is about: design rules for rainwater collection systems: the standard to follow, where the water may be used and how the tank volume is worked out.

a) (Ek:RG-23/1/2021-31373) (Değişik:RG-11/3/2025-32838) Binalarda tesis edilecek yerinde içilebilir olmayan su sistemleri yapı ruhsatı eki mekanik tesisat projesinde gösterilir. Yağmur suyu toplama sistemi bulunan yapılarda, gri su sisteminin yağmur suyu toplama sisteminden ayrı planlanması esastır. Sistemde kullanılacak depolama tankları; bina bünyesinde, çekme mesafelerini ihlal etmemek kaydıyla bahçe zemini üstü veya altında, arka ve yan bahçelerde zemin altında, ön bahçede ise yol cephesine 2 metreden fazla yaklaşmamak kaydıyla zemin altında, herhangi bir öncelik sırası olmaksızın konumlandırılabilir. Bunlardan;

1) Yağmur suyu toplama sistemleri için TS EN 16941-1 Yerinde içilemez su sistemleri - Bölüm 1: Yağmur suyu kullanımı için sistemler standardına uyulur. Yağmur suyu yalnızca çatı yüzeylerinden elde edilir ve parsel bahçelerinin sulanmasında veya tuvalet rezervuarlarında/sifonlarında kullanılır. Depolama hacmi; binanın bulunduğu ilin m²’ye düşen yıllık toplam yağış miktarı ortalaması, çatının yüzey tipi ve izdüşüm alanına göre hesaplanan yıllık toplanabilir yağmur suyu miktarının en az %6’sını karşılayacak şekilde, TS EN 16941-1 standardının EK-A’sında verilen yöntemlerden uygun olanı kullanılarak belirlenir. Depolama tankı tahliye hattı, varsa yağmur suyu şebekesine bağlanır. Yağmur suyu toplama sistemi tahliye hattının, aynı binada bulunan gri su depolama tankına bağlanması halinde tahliye edilen yağmur suyu gri su olarak değerlendirilir.

Provisional Article 3, paragraph (6)

What it is about: cases where the requirements of article 57/A, paragraph (5) are not sought (transitional provision).

How the province figure is worked out

m³ per year = roof area (m²) × yearly rain normal (mm) ÷ 1,000. 1 mm of rain is 1 litre of water on 1 m² of surface; 1,000 litres is 1 m³ (1 tonne). The yearly normal is the sum of the province's monthly rain averages for 1991-2020 (CHIRPS satellite and station data, computed by the site; MGM data was not used).

Label: rough calculation, no efficiency factor; the real amount collected changes with the roof type, filter and tank. The regulation (article 57, paragraph 7 (a), quoted above) sets its own method for the tank volume, with TS EN 16941-1, Annex A; the figure on this page does not replace that calculation.
